Knoxville in Bloom: Exploring the Iconic Dogwood Driving Trails
April 1–30, 2025

Each spring, Knoxville transforms into a stunning showcase of soft pinks, bright whites, and lush greens thanks to one of the city’s most beloved traditions—the Dogwood Trails. Whether you’re new to Knoxville or have lived here your whole life, the Dogwood Driving Trails are a must-see experience that captures the charm and natural beauty of East Tennessee.

Running from April 1–30, these historic trails stretch over 90 miles through 13 neighborhoods across Knoxville, winding through tree-lined streets and perfectly manicured gardens. The pink lines that guide you along the trail are hand-painted every year—yes, with over 100 gallons of custom-blended paint!—making it nearly impossible to get lost as you enjoy the blooms.

A Blooming Legacy

The Dogwood Trails began in 1955, sparked by a passionate response to a journalist’s harsh take on Knoxville's appearance. Determined to show the true spirit and beauty of our city, the Knoxville Garden Club launched a beautification project that would eventually become the Dogwood Arts organization we know today. What started as a single trail has flourished into one of the most charming and community-driven initiatives in the region.

Today, thanks to the dedication of homeowners and volunteers, the Dogwood Trails not only celebrate spring—they celebrate neighborhood pride, tradition, and the magic that happens when people come together to make something beautiful.

Drive, Walk, or Bike the Trails

You can explore the trails however you’d like: take a slow Sunday drive with the windows down, go for a peaceful walk, or hop on your bike for a fresh-air adventure. Each route is marked clearly with pink lines and arrows, and each neighborhood offers its own unique take on springtime charm.

While there are trails in all four corners of Knoxville—North, South, East, and West—I have to admit, my heart belongs to West Knoxville. The blooms in Westmoreland, Sequoyah Hills, Farragut, and Deane Hill feel like something straight out of a postcard. Between the elegant homes, old-growth trees, and curated gardens, it’s hard not to feel inspired and refreshed.

More Than Just a Trail

Beyond the trails, the Dogwood Arts organization has expanded its mission to include a range of beautiful experiences—like private Featured Gardens, scenic Hikes & Bikes, and the incredible Bazillion Blooms initiative, which helps keep dogwoods thriving all across East Tennessee.

This isn’t just about flowers. It’s about history, community, and honoring Knoxville’s natural beauty in a way that makes you fall in love with this city all over again.

Plan Your Visit

Whether you’re a local looking for a sweet weekend activity or you’re planning a spring visit to Knoxville, don’t miss this iconic tradition. The Dogwood Trails are truly one of the most breathtaking ways to experience what makes East Tennessee so special.

So grab a coffee, roll your windows down, and follow the pink lines. You’re in for a beautiful ride.
