Follow the Peppermint Trail: Knoxville’s Most Charming Holiday Tradition
If you’re looking for a little extra holiday magic this season, Downtown Knoxville has officially transformed into a festive wonderland—and it’s one of my absolute favorite things to experience each year. The Peppermint Trail is back from November 28 through January 4, 2026, and whether you’re a local or visiting Knoxville for the first time, this is such a sweet way to celebrate the season.
Picture this: peppermint signs dotting the sidewalks, glittering lights wrapped around every corner, and the scent of cinnamon, gingerbread, and candy cane lattes drifting through Market Square. As you walk the Peppermint Trail, you’ll find holiday treats everywhere—morning coffees topped with whipped peppermint, cozy brunch spots serving red-and-white desserts, and local bars crafting the cutest holiday cocktails. It’s the kind of small-town charm that makes Knoxville feel straight out of a Christmas movie.
And the fun doesn’t stop with treats. Our boutiques and shops really get into the spirit too, offering peppermint-themed shirts, handmade soaps, candles, and adorable gifts you won’t find anywhere else. It’s the perfect time to shop local and check off a few people on your Christmas list.
But one of the biggest highlights?
The Elf on the Shelf® Downtown Knoxville Adventure is back! Santa is sending more than two dozen Scout Elves to hide throughout downtown businesses, creating the cutest scavenger hunt for families (and honestly, adults love it just as much).
You can pick up your North Pole Pass at Mast General Store or the Knoxville Visitors Center to guide you on your hunt. The first 5,000 visitors even get a special holiday stamp they can use to decorate their pass. Find 20 or more elves, turn in your completed booklet, and you’ll be entered to win prizes. It’s such a fun, free holiday tradition to add to your downtown day.
Between the peppermint goodies, festive shopping, ice skating, and holiday markets popping up all season long, Downtown Knoxville truly comes alive in the most magical way. If you’re new to Knoxville—or thinking of making Knoxville home—this is such a great snapshot of what our city does best: community, charm, and a whole lot of Christmas cheer.
So bundle up, grab a peppermint mocha, and sleigh the Peppermint Trail this season.
I hope to see you downtown!
