Winter is Here! Where to Ski (or Sip Hot Chocolate) Near Knoxville ❄️☕

Winter has officially arrived in East Tennessee, and we’ve already had two snowfalls this season! While I’m perfectly content sipping hot chocolate and staying cozy, Carter would much rather be carving down the slopes. If you're like him and itching for some skiing or snowboarding, there are some great ski resorts within a day’s drive of Knoxville. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just looking for a fun winter escape, here are some top spots to check out:

Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia (4.5-hour drive)

Snowshoe is one of the best ski resorts in the Southeast, offering 60+ trails, night skiing, and a charming alpine village packed with restaurants, shops, and après-ski spots. With 1,500 feet of vertical drop, it has the most extensive terrain in the region, making it a favorite for both beginners and advanced skiers. Plus, they make snow almost daily, so you’re always guaranteed fresh powder.

Cataloochee Ski Area – Maggie Valley, NC (2.5-hour drive)

Cataloochee is a great option for a quick ski trip! It’s one of the first places to open for ski season in the South and is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and well-maintained slopes. With 18 trails and a solid snowmaking system, it’s a fun, accessible spot for anyone looking to hit the slopes without a long drive. Maggie Valley itself is also a cute mountain town with great local restaurants to warm up after a day in the cold.

Beech Mountain Resort – Beech Mountain, NC (3-hour drive)

As the highest ski resort in the East, Beech Mountain is known for its breathtaking views and powdery snow. It has 17 trails, a terrain park, and even an on-mountain brewery—so whether you’re skiing or just there for the vibe, it’s a great winter getaway. Beech Mountain also has a charming alpine village with fire pits, live music, and cozy spots to warm up after a long day on the slopes.

Sugar Mountain Resort – Banner Elk, NC (3-hour drive)

If you’re looking for variety, Sugar Mountain is a fantastic choice! With 21 trails, night skiing, a tubing park, and even ice skating, it’s perfect for a full winter experience. Sugar has some of the best terrain in the region and is a favorite for skiers and snowboarders alike. Plus, the nearby town of Banner Elk is a great place to grab a bite and unwind.

Ober Mountain (Ober Gatlinburg) – Gatlinburg, TN (1-hour drive)

If you want to ski without leaving Tennessee, Ober Mountain is your best bet. It’s a classic winter spot, offering skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and even an alpine coaster. While it’s smaller than some of the other resorts, it’s a fun, convenient option right in our backyard. Plus, you can take the aerial tram from downtown Gatlinburg, which is an experience in itself!

Whether you're hitting the slopes or just enjoying the cozy side of winter (like me), there are plenty of options for a fun winter adventure near Knoxville. Where’s your favorite spot to ski, snowboard, or just sip hot chocolate by the fire? Let me know! ❄️🏔️☕
